Appetising it was not, but it did seem entirely apt that my first meal in Japan should include a dish described as “two kinds of jellyfish with pickled vegetables”. Nothing had been lost in translation, I can assure you. It tasted every bit as awful as it sounds and the glutinous tendrils had an unforgettably unpleasant texture.
